Winner of the U. S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance, writer- director Macon Blair’s debut feature is a tonally audacious genre outing unafraid to slip for a moment or two into the sweet relief of magical realism. Blair’s premise is simple—Ruth (Melanie Lynskey, cast to perfection), a quiet loner, comes home to find her house robbed, and when the police won’t help, she seeks vigilante justice with equally socially inept neighbor, Tony (Elijah Wood)—but his ever- increasingly sprawling plot is fueled by a myopic moral perspective rendered in black and white.
Back in 2012, Netflix produced Lilyhammer, its first original series. And in just four short years, Netflix has become a powerhouse of original programming with.Quick Questions; TV Ratings; Good Witch: Season Four; Would You Keep Watching the Hallmark Series? Better Call Saul: Season Four; Would You Keep Watching the AMC Series? Ruth wonders aloud why everyone is an asshole (moreso, why assholes so easily get away with being assholes), and Blair seemingly wonders the same thing, punctuating his mundane neo- noir with gruesome violence and unexpected physical comedy (a projectile vomit scene, in particular, rivals the classic back- alley puke- fest from Team America). Blair’s worked extensively with his friend Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin, Green Room), so the two share a startling sense of pace and a knack for making even the most sloppy action sequences feel precise, but Saulnier is so much bleaker, whereas Blair allows each of his film’s supposed assholes a chance to redeem, or at least explain, themselves. A crappy cop is going through a messy divorce; a delinquent son acts out against the specter of an absentee father; a guy whose dog craps on your lawn just wasn’t really paying attention—as Ruth struggles to confront the callousness of her cold world, she realizes that we’re all pretty much doing the same thing too: We’re struggling. Okja Year: 2. 01. Director: Bong Joon- ho. The films of Bong Joon Ho often feature a rambunctious energy that threatens to derail them at every turn. That’s the double- edged- sword thrill of his work: Nobody makes movies like he does, and at their weaker moments, you’re grateful for that. His latest may be his most erratic, hurtling between genres, tones and ideas without much concern about how they’ll all fit together. As such, Okja is an intriguing mess, which you should take as a recommendation and a warning. It’s a kids’ movie that’s best when it’s darkest—in other words, when it least appeals to its presumed target audience. It has exasperating performances from veteran actors, but it can also be quite sobering and exhilarating. Bong has worked with relatively small budgets and produced impressive sci- fi works such as The Host and Snowpiercer. Okja is his priciest—not to mention the most- expensive South Korean film ever—and the added resources have been brought to bear on a story that requires significant effects. Most significantly, we see the budget in the design and rendering of Okja, which is rather magnificent. Utterly believable, this lumbering, expressive pig has real heft and dimensionality, as opposed to so many CG characters that look weightless in comparison to their human costars. For Okja to work at all, Mija (Seo Hyun) and her pet need to establish a close rapport—especially because Okja doesn’t speak—and the film pulls that off with aplomb. But as soon as you think you’ve got a bead on how you feel about the movie, it throws something new at you. The African Queen Year: 1. Director: John Huston. Samuel Sayer (Robert Morley) and his sister Rose (Katharine Hepburn) are missionaries in German East Africa around during WWI. Charlie Allnut (Humphrey Bogart, in what would be his only Best Actor Oscar win), the captain of tramp steamer The African Queen, delivers their provisions—and, one day, the news that war has broken out between Germany and Britain. Germans burn down the village, a soldier beats Samuel and he soon dies from complications of the incident. Charlie comes to get Rose out of the area; Rose comes up with a plan to torpedo a German gunboat. The initial plan fails but the surprisingly scrappy and enterprising Rose is undeterred. The pair encounter a series of rapids and perils that are, of course, not at all metaphorical, and over time, strike up an unlikely but also inevitable relationship. Love triumphs. So do the torpedoes. John Huston’s oddball, odd- couple romantic comedy adventure is a gripping story with a great pair of lead actors (though Bogart arguably had more Ocscar- worthy performances earlier in his career) and combines savagery and sweetness in an eccentric and very satisfying way. Experimenter Year: 2. Director: Michael Almereyda. Watching Experimenter is to realize how little life is in most biopics. Which is odd: Despite being based on a real life, the standard biopic feels freeze- dried, narrative conventions calcifying the subject matter and strangling any spontaneity out of the material. Most such movies carry the stench of rigor mortis, but Experimenter is alive and alert from its first moment. Where other biopics seem to have made up their minds about their famous figures before the opening credits roll, this remarkable study of social psychologist Stanley Milgram remains curious, exploring and questioning his life, career and findings. The man’s work may be more than 5. Michael Almereyda has crafted a bracing, daring drama that extrapolates it into every crevice of modernity. Many biopics simplify great lives; Experimenter enriches and enlarges one. Cemetery of Splendor Year: 2. Director: Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Deep into the enchanting Cemetery of Splendor, an assortment of fit- looking bodies get up, sit down, join one another, walk away, split apart, ride bikes and trade seats, all without reason but obviously with rhyme, as if, as a viewer, you’ve stumbled upon a reel of background footage with the film’s main action cut out. Soon after, a sparkling shot of blue sky is calmly violated by a giant amoeba—or not, because maybe the amoeba is normal size, because the perspective isn’t clarified. And soon after that, a woman (Jenjira Pongpas) rises from an unperturbed nap, unsure if she’s found her way out of the labyrinth of her dreams, or if she’s only woken into another level of subconscious surreality. Meanwhile, a hospital of soldiers afflicted with a mysterious sleeping sickness, who rest indefinitely under glass tubes used as part of an ill- defined light therapy, rests indefinitely upon a sacred burial ground. At least that’s what the modern manifestation of god- like princesses, come to life resembling the statues at the woman’s favorite shrine, tell her. Such is the stuff of Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s typical filmmaking fodder, the Thai director not so much doing something radically different with Cemetery of Splendor as just laying one more layer of fantasy upon his oeuvre, waiting with clairvoyant patience to see if his characters, and by extension his viewers, will ever wake up—or if they even want to. Patton Year: 1. 97. Director: Franklin J. Schaffner. Watching Patton, Franklin J. Schaffner’s colossal biographical ode to one of World War II’s most renowned and most controversial military figures, you get the sense that George S. Patton would likely dig Schaffner’s work; the film doesn’t apologize for itself or for its subject’s actions and attitudes, much as Patton didn’t make a habit of apologizing for either unless directly ordered to by his superiors. There may be no more appropriate way to honor the man’s memory than that, such as Patton can be narrowly described as an “honor.” The film doesn’t exactly flatter the general, per se, but straddles a line between hero worship and sober representation, letting Patton, and by extension George C. Scott’s commanding and iconic portrait of him, speak for himself without fear of condemnation or reprisal. As Patton is about Patton, so, too, is it about Scott, which makes sense: If you make a movie and name it after its central character, you’re also making it about its central performance, and so it’s good that Scott was up to the task of reincarnating the late general in all his egotistical, violent, callous, and shockingly vulnerable glory. Patton is a war movie, make no mistake, but it uses the war movie blueprint for housing a character study of its protagonist. The results, almost half a century later, remain completely singular in the genre. A Nightmare on Elm Street Year: 1. Director: Wes Craven. Taking a big hint from The Cabinet of Caligari, Wes Craven warps reality and tackles one of humanity’s primal fears: the dark. Freddy Kruger stomps through intangible dreamscapes, tormenting a group of teenagers by denying them sleep lest he kill them in a series of extremely creative disembowelments. Technology and creativity merged in this feature to create a searing illustration of fatigue and color that has yet to be effectively replicated. The Panic in Needle Park Year: 1. Director: Jerry Schatzberg. Want to know what it was like for Lou Reed to score drugs in New York? Then this is your film. Al Pacino stars as a junkie who drags his girlfriend (Kitty Winn) into the life. It sounds like a downer, and it definitely can be, but Pacino’s energy keeps the film buoyant and interesting. New York in the late . Few films capture what it was like to be young and rudderless in the Big Apple like Panic in Needle Park. Sing Street Director: John Carney Sing Street spins art out of history, but you might mistake it for pop sensationalism at first glance. If so, you’re forgiven. In sharp contrast to John Carney’s breakout movie, 2. Once, or even his most recent effort, 2. Begin Again, Sing Street aims to please crowds and overburden tear ducts. There’s a sugary surface buoyancy to the film that helps the darkness clouding beneath its exterior go down more easily. Here, look at the plot synopsis: A teenage boy living in Dublin’s inner city in 1. If the period Carney uses as his storytelling backdrop doesn’t make Sing Street an ’8. You may walk into the film expecting to be delighted and amused. The film won’t let you down in either regard, but it’ll rob you of your breath, too. Mustang Year: 2. 01. Director: Deniz Gamze Erg. Surprisingly Good Horror Movies You Can Watch On Netflix Right Now. I love horror movies. WOAH big shocker there, right? A horror author who loves horror movies, who’da thought. Anyway, even though I know there are some people out there who are essentially horror snobs — in that they only watch or enjoy the best of the best — and that’s one way to do it. But me, I like to experience it all. That’s why Netflix streaming is a beautiful divine gift from the gods and I love it so much I wish I could give it a hug. Barring the terrifying less- than- one- stars that are prevalent throughout the category, I dabble in most of what Netflix has to offer in horror. And you know what? There are some real gems hiding out there! So that’s why I gathered them all here in a neat little pile — so you don’t have to search endlessly for a decent horror flick. Walk with me, will you? The Houses October Built. The Houses October Built. Fair warning here: you’re going to see a lot of found footage in this list. BECAUSE I FRIGGIN LOVE IT. I don’t know what happened to this genre in the last 1. The Blair Witch Project” and now filmmakers have really stepped up their game. What used to be a lazy excuse to swing a camera around and scream has evolved into something far more interesting. ANYWAY. Halloween is my jam (durrrr of course it is) and “The Houses October Built” is perfect to watch during that time of year because it’s all about a trip in October where five friends set out in an RV, cameras in hand, to explore the country in search of “extreme” haunted houses. They visit a handful and interview the workers, which — if any of this footage is real — is almost scarier than the plot itself. Sounds like a great idea, right? OF COURSE NOT IT’S A HORROR MOVIE YOU SILLY GOOSE. This one is made all the better by the realistic dialogue and banter between the cast, not to mention that when they go through the haunts with their cameras it’s like a first- person experience — you’re going through, too, and oh BOY does it make me want it to be Halloween nowwwww. ABCs of Death 2. ABCs of Death 2. Yeah, that’s 2, not the original, and there’s good reason for that. The first one was all sorts of garbage, kind of like the filmmakers didn’t take it seriously, but the second one is a big improvement.“ABCs of Death 2” is an anthology (another of my favorite horror movie genres) made up of 2. Each was given a letter, they chose a word and made a short horror film based around that word. Innovative, different — I love it. They range from hilarious to terrifying to INCREDIBLY dark. Give it a chance, you won’t regret it! The Den. The Den. Here’s another found footage movie — but it’s not found footage in the traditional sense, it’s more millennial- era- Apple- fueled found footage. It focuses on Liz, a young woman conducting an experiment to speak with as many people as possible through a random webcam site called The Den (a thinly- veiled parody of Chat Roulette, even though she doesn’t see nearly the amount of dicks as would be expected). Things turn south quickly when a woman who claims her webcam is broken continues to stay in contact with Liz; suddenly her webcam turns on and Liz sees her brutally murdered. What follows is a nightmarish turn of events that actually had me pretty terrified. Why do I INSIST on watching these things alone in the dark? The most interesting thing about “The Den” is HOW they utilize technology to tell the story. Everything goes through either a smartphone, a computer, Go. Pro technology, you name it. It’s such a great idea and probably why “Unfriended” promptly ripped it off. One night he finds a pop- up book on his shelf and asks his mother to read it to him. The book is disturbing; it tells the story of the monster called Mister Babadook. Once you let him in, you can’t escape him. Rightfully this scares the shit out of Samuel, who’s already a handful as is. But shortly after, weird stuff starts happening around the house and Samuel blames Mister Babadook. Of course it gets worse from there. The direction in “The Babadook” is incredible (yay females in horror!) and the cinematography is fantastic. Within the first five minutes of the movie you HAAAAATE this kid right along with his stressed- out mom, and that’s the mark of a good film. If you haven’t already seen this one just GO DO IT RIGHT NOW please and thank you sorry I yelled. Jug Face. Jug Face“Jug Face” really surprised me, honestly. The title is intriguing but I probably saw it on my Netflix suggested row about 1. I’m glad I did, however, because it’s a really interesting concept. If I had to give it a genre I’d call it “backwoods gothic horror”. In a rural swamp- like community, Ada lives with her family who worships a pit with healing powers that contains a monster. She also has sex with her brother and makes very poor decisions (maybe I should’ve swapped those two). The pit needs sacrifices, however, to keep the members of the community safe from the monster within. Basically, a man named Dawai creates jugs made from clay while in a trance. The jugs all end up with faces of members of the community and the person chosen must be the sacrifice. Well, back to the bad decisions Ada makes, because she finds a new jug with her face and hides it. I mean, I get it, who wants to be monster- munchies but that sets off a whole domino effect of bad shit and. I’m so glad I live somewhere with wifi. The Taking of Deborah Logan. The Taking of Deborah Logan. I won’t spoil anything for you but this movie is the source of what is probably the creepiest gif on the Internet. She doesn’t really want to participate but she and her daughter need the money so she goes through with it. What follows is a both heartbreaking and terrifying descent into madness. Unsettling, strange, and well- shot, this one is a great found footage standard to watch on a boring Sunday afternoon. Also, it’s one of the few that made me yell “HOLY SHIT” and scare my dog off the couch. Creep. Creep. I watched “Creep” most recently because OH MY GOD A FIVE STAR HORROR MOVIE ON NETFLIX THAT’S NOT “THE BABADOOK” WHAAAAAT! Another found footage beauty, Aaron answers an ad on Craigslist for a day’s worth of filming. At a vacation home in the woods, he meets Josef, who has hired him for the job. Here’s what makes “Creep” so great: from the first moment you meet Josef, something is off, but you’re not sure. It’s not so much “bitch get out the house” vibe, but it’s enough to give you. Anyway, one of the most interesting things about “Creep” is the fact that everyone knows at least one person like Josef. I mean, maybe not to the full extent of what happens in the film, but we’ve all met someone that just feels off. Maybe they touch your arm too much or start inappropriate conversations but to ignore them or avoid them seems cruel, like you’re the one being rude. I don’t know. It’s just a very well- executed idea and I’m super happy to hear that it’s rumored to be a trilogy. More “Creep” please! Starry Eyes. Starry Eyes“Starry Eyes” was a Kickstarter darling that’s a little hard to describe even though I think it’s fantastic. Let me try: Sarah wants to be famous, has shitty friends, there’s lots of body horror and gross- out moments but all- in- all it works. I actually watched it because one of my favorite authors, Chuck Palahniuk, kept tweeting about the project. And it makes total sense — this is right up his alley. I don’t want to get too into the plot as it would spoil things but watch “Starry Eyes” if you’re looking less for jump scares or gore and more deep, somber horror. Good one for a rainy day. All Cheerleaders Die. All Cheerleaders Die. Lucky Mc. Kee is one of my favorites in the genre and he produced/wrote/directed the delightful “All Cheerleaders Die”. It’s just a fun romp, honestly — scary in places, hilarious in others, and the soundtrack is really fantastic. She becomes part of their popular group while Leena, your typical Wiccan Goth outsider, watches from afar. But in case you can’t tell from the title the cheerleaders don’t fare too well in this movie, and it only gets crazier from there. I feel like this one would be a great movie to watch with friends and invent a drinking game. Take a drink when you see panties! Take a drink when there’s a sick cheerleader burn! Take a drink when someone dies a horrible gory death! See, there’s a fun time to be had by all. Grave Encounters. Grave Encounters. Funny story, I actually avoided watching “Grave Encounters” for a long time because the title screen looked like a cheap ripoff of the television show “Ghost Adventures”. Turns out it is — sort of — but while it does begin with a quite excellent parody of Zak Bagans (oh I just love you with your little gelled up hair and impossibly tight t- shirts and your penchant for calling ghosts “bro”) it quickly avalanches into a really scary found footage favorite. The Grave Encounters team goes to an abandoned mental institution with a dark past (just like you’d see on “Ghost Adventures”) intending to do an overnight lockdown. However, unlike on “Ghost Adventures”, you see behind the scenes that the team doesn’t expect to find anything and are more than prepared to fake their way through an investigation. One of my favorite parts is when the Zak Bagans wannabe asks a landscaper if he’d ever seen a ghost; the gardener, with the last of the team’s petty cash in his pocket, points vaguely in one direction and says “Yes. Over there.”But guess what, the asylum has other plans. When their lockdown is over, one of the crew members notices that while his watch reads 6am it’s still pitch dark outside. And also there’s no exit. And also HOLY FUCK SO MANY GHOSTS! Watch this one in the dark. It’s intense, the reactions are realistic, and while there are quite a few jump scares they’re actually well- executed. I made my husband watch it last summer for my birthday and he’s still mad at me for it. Dead End. Dead End. Oddly enough I found “Dead End” from a You. How Netflix Uses Analytics To Select Movies, Create Content, & Make Multimillion Dollar Decisions. In 2. 00. 6 Netflix announced the Netflix Prize, a competition for creating an algorithm that would “substantially improve the accuracy of predictions about how much someone is going to enjoy a movie based on their movie preferences.” There was a winner, which improved the algorithm by 1. However, Netflix never did implement the algorithm, saying: “We evaluated some of the new methods offline but the additional accuracy gains that we measured did not seem to justify the engineering effort needed to bring them into a production environment.”But Netflix didn’t shun all algorithm and data efforts. To the uninitiated, it may seem that Netflix’s analytics go only as far as views. They may also think that the show House of Cards was chosen because Netflix “thought subscribers might like it.” But the truth is much, much deeper. The $1. 00 million show wasn’t green- lighted solely because it seemed like a good plot. The decision was based on a number of factors and seemingly almost entirely on data. The reality is that Netflix is a data- driven company. Saying that Netflix chooses new content based on “whoever they can get a license with” is a very thin and vague statement. Netflix does need licenses from studios, but they don’t just pick movies and television shows at random. Read on to learn more about the future of television programming and how analytics is helping Netflix become a better business and service. Analytics at Netflix. The core job of analytics is to help companies gain insight into their customers. Then, the companies can optimize their marketing and deliver a better product. Having this large user base allows Netflix to gather a tremendous amount of data. With this data, Netflix can make better decisions and ultimately make users happier with their service. Traditional television networks don’t have these kinds of privileges in their broadcasting. Ratings are just approximations, green- lighting a pilot is based on tradition and intuition. Netflix has the advantage, because being an internet company allows Netflix to know their customers well, not just have a “persona” or “idea” of what their average customer is like. Let’s look at an example. If you’re watching a series like Arrested Development, Netflix is able to see (on a large scale) the “completion rate” (for lack of a better term) of users. For example, the people at Netflix could ask themselves “How many users who started Arrested Development (from season 1) finished it to the end of season 3?” Then they get an answer. Let’s say it’s 7. Then they ask “Where was the common cut off point for users? What did the other 3. How big of a ? We need to get a good idea of the overall engagement of this show.”They then gather this data and see user trends to understand engagement at a deep level. If Netflix saw that 7. Arrested Development. They know there’s a good chance users will watch the new season. But the data gets deeper than that. Here’s a look at some of the “events” Netflix tracks: When you pause, rewind, or fast forward. What day you watch content (Netflix has found people watch TV shows during the week and movies during the weekend.)The date you watch. What time you watch content. Where you watch (zip code)What device you use to watch (Do you like to use your tablet for TV shows and your Roku for movies? Do people access the Just for Kids feature more on their i. Pads, etc.?)When you pause and leave content (and if you ever come back)The ratings given (about 4 million per day)Searches (about 3 million per day)Browsing and scrolling behavior. Netflix also looks at data within movies. They take various “screen shots” to look at “in the moment” characteristics. Netflix has confirmed they know when the credits start rolling; but there’s far more to it than just that. Some have figured these characteristics may be the volume, colors, and scenery that help Netflix find out what users like. Why does Netflix want to know when the credits roll? They probably want to see what users do afterward. Do they leave the app or go back to browsing? Notice how Netflix now offers movie recommendations (they have personalization algorithms that aim to accurately predict what users will watch next) soon after credits start (or, for television shows, they automatically play the next episode). Because if users leave the app after watching a show, that may mean they are more likely to cancel. Allow me to explain: Through their analytics, Netflix may know how much content users need to watch in order to be less likely to cancel. For instance, maybe they know “If we can get each user to watch at least 1. If they drop below 5 hours, there is a 9. So now that they have this data, they can ask themselves “How do we help users watch at least 1. One idea: enable post- play, which automatically plays the next episode of a TV show unless the user opts out. For movies, show movie suggestions (based on the rating of the movie just watched) right after the credits start rolling and allow users to press play right from that screen. Netflix can add this feature to their web and mobile apps and, again, through analytics, see the results. This is only a theory of how Netflix came to the decision to implement post- play and an example of how analytics can help Netflix make decisions. I don’t have any inside information. So all of this data and the large user base allow Netflix to quickly see trends and formulate opinions. Later, we’ll get into the factors that made them green- light House of Cards. The Recommendation Algorithm. As part of the on- boarding process, Netflix asks new users to rate their interest in movie genres and rate any movies they’ve already seen. Why do they do this right up front? Because helping users discover new movies and TV shows they’ll enjoy is integral to Netflix’s success. If people run out of movies they want to watch and have no way to find new movies, they’ll cancel. It’s important that Netflix puts a lot of focus on making sure they have an accurate algorithm for this rather than having users rely on outside sources to find new movies. Is the recommendation algorithm accurate and successful? Since 7. 5% of viewer activity is based on these suggestions, I’d say it works pretty well for them. But now that more users are moving to streaming, what they actually watch is more important than ratings. When it was DVD- by- mail, Netflix users had to wait, and the rating was a “thought process.” Netflix engineers Xavier Amatriain and Carlos Gomez- Uribe explain: Amatriain: “When we were a DVD- by- mail company and people gave us a rating, they were expressing a thought process. You added something to your queue because you wanted to watch it a few days later; there was a cost in your decision and a delayed reward. With instant streaming, you start playing something, you don’t like it, you just switch. Users don’t really perceive the benefit of giving explicit feedback, so they invest less effort.”Gomez- Uribe: “Testing has shown that the predicted ratings aren’t actually super- useful, while what you’re actually playing is. We’re going from focusing exclusively on ratings and rating predictions to depending on a more complex ecosystem of algorithms.”As we can see, the algorithm is evolving. There are entire teams (Netflix has over 8. It’s not static because user behavior and the Netflix product are changing. For a deeper description of the algorithm, check out this post written by the people who design and work on it. The New Thumbs Up/Down Rating System. In April 2. 01. 7, Netflix debuted a new rating system. Previously, users would rate movies and TV shows on 1- 5 stars. But after their product teams ran some tests, they found a new, simpler “thumbs up- thumbs down” test beat the original star- based rating system. In their Q1 2. 01. Letter to Shareholders, Netflix wrote: As always, our product team has dozens of tests running in the endless quest for even higher member satisfaction. One test that won conclusively last year and has now been rolled out to all members is our new “thumbs- up thumbs- down” feedback model, replacing the 5- star model we have had from our DVD days. The amount of usage we get with this new approach is over twice as many ratings. With this additional personal input, we’ll be able to improve personalization, making your front screen on Netflix even more relevant. How Big Data Factored into House of Cards. In 2. 01. 1 Netflix made one of the biggest decisions they’ll ever make. It wasn’t anything material, but rather it was about content. They outbid top television channels like HBO and AMC to earn the rights for a U. S. Netflix has undoubtedly made other big money investments before (shipping centers, postage costs, etc.), but nothing like this on the content side. So why did they make such a big bet, and how did analytics factor into the decision? Let’s get into it. Pre- Green- light. Before green- lighting House of Cards, Netflix knew: A lot of users watched the David Fincher directed movie The Social Network from beginning to end. The British version of “House of Cards” has been well watched. Those who watched the British version “House of Cards” also watched Kevin Spacey films and/or films directed by David Fincher. Each of these 3 synergistic factors had to contain a certain volume of users. Otherwise, House of Cards might belong to a different network right now. Netflix had a lot of users in all 3 factors. This combination of factors had a lot of weight in Netflix’s decision to make the $1. U. S. Jonathan Friedland, Chief Communications Officer, says“Because we have a direct relationship with consumers, we know what people like to watch and that helps us understand how big the interest is going to be for a given show. An era changes with Aradhana (1. When Aradhana unfolded in 1. Mere sapno ki rani kab ayegi tu, a phenomenon called Rajesh Khanna was born. Also born was another and perhaps more startling phenomenon – a new Kishore Kumar who with this one film swept aside Rafi to emerge as the No. Rafi did have two duets in the film Bagon mein bahaar hai(with Lata) and Gunguna rahe hain bhanwre(with Asha Bhosle), but Kishore Kumar with Lata surpassed him with Kora kagaz tha ye man mera, and Rafi had nothing to counter his two solos Mere sapno ki rani kab ayegi tu and Roop tera mastana. This was no flash in the pan. Aradhana became a clear watershed film which marked the change between the old and the new, and the end of the Golden Era of fifties and sixties. What is most interesting is how Rafi started sliding behind, and Kishore Kumar became the new Rafi, singing not only for Rajesh Khanna, but later becoming Amitabh Bachchan’s voice, and then singing for virtually everyone. This was in some ways similar to the earlier great watershed year of 1. Lata Mangeshkar with her immortal songs of that year with all the great composers such as Ayega Aanewala (Khemchand Prakash, Mahal), Hawa mein udata jaye mera lal dupatta malmal, Meri ankhon mein bas gaya koi re, Jiya beqaraar hai (Shankar Jaikishan, Barsaat), Uthaye ja unke sitam, Koi mere dil mein khushi ban ke aya (Naushad, Andaaz), Dil se bhula do tum mujhe (C Ramchandra, Patanga), Tumhare bulane ko ji chahta hai (Anil Biswas, Ladli), Sajan ki galiyan chhod chale, Baharein phir bhi ayengi (Shyam Sundar, Bazaar/ Lahore), La re lappa la re lappa ayee lakhda (Vinod, Ek Thi Ladki), Chale jana nahin (Husnlal Bhagatram, Badi Bahan) etc. There are several contrasts. Lata had been around for about two years and barely twenty then. Kishore Kumar in 1. Rafi, and only a few years younger than him. Yet Aradhana seemed to make him twenty years younger. Then Lata’s rise can be explained by musical reasons; some have tried to attribute it to Noorjehan’s migration to Pakistan (to which I do not subscribe, see my article Lata Mangeshkar vs Noorjehan). But there are no such apparent reasons for Rafi’s slide. It was not as if one morning in 1. His voice retained its timbre and he still sounded Rafi- ish. This has given rise to a whole . As if to answer this charge, RD Burman got both Kishore Kumar and Rafi sing the same solo in a film – Tum bin jaoon kahanin Pyar Ka Mausam, and even an inveterate Rafi fan would have to admit Kishore Kumar’s version is far superior. Later, RD Burman used the two in conjunction to sing the title song in Yaadon Ki Baraat (1. Kishore Kumar singing for one brother and Rafi for another. By this time there was no doubt who was the leader and who the follower. RD Burman- Kishore Kumar became a byword for the musical style of the seventies. Laxmikant Pyarelal had achieved spectacular success with Dosti (1. Home » Hindi Movies Music » Aashiqui 2 Songs » Sunn Raha Hai By Ankit Tiwari. Off-hand I too can not recall any non-film song of Kishore Kumar, though the Internet says he sang some 80 private songs. Film songs based on classical ragas (3) – Music from the mountains. June 17, 2012. Now, lets talk about what appear to be two opposite thoughts about Zindagi (Life). The one is by what I regard as the greatest lyricist of all times Shakeel Badayuni. Rafi’s voice. Post- Aradhana they continued with Rafi and you have a large number of peasant Rafi solos and duets in films like Khilona, Jeevan Mrityu, Humjoli, Anjana, Jigri Dost, Jeene Ki Raah, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Aap Aye Bahar Ayee, Pratigya, Sargam etc. However, they were too smart to miss the winds of change. So you have Kishore Kumar’s Khizan ke phool pe aati kabhi bahaar nahito Rafi’s Ye reshami zulfen ye sharbati ankhenin Do Raaste. In Aan Milo Sajna Rafi- Lata title duet is countered by Kishore Kumar- Lata duet Achcha to hum chalte hain, and Rafi solo Phalak se tod kar dekho. And you have several more Kishore Kumar super hits, such as Main jahan chala jaoon bahar chali aye(Banphool, 1. Sachai chhup nahin sakti. The coup de grace was Karz (1. Kishore Kumar sang the rock star song Meri umar ke naujawanon. The message was clear; he was the voice of the new generation. Kalyanji Anandji did not have much Rafi baggage, their main singer was Mukesh. While they continued to create songs for Mukesh, their adoption of Kishore Kumar as the lead singer was breathtaking. Theirs was a most amazing transformation in style – it is difficult to believe that it is the same composers that composed Kishore Kumar’s Khaike paan Banaraswalawho in the 6. Hum chhor chalein hain mehfil ko, Tumhein zindagi ke ujale mubarak, Mere toote hue dil se koi to aaj ye poochheetc for Mukesh. And what stupendous success they achieved with Kishore Kumar’s voice in Sachcha Jhoota, Safar, Kahani Kismat Ki, Haath Ki Safai, Victoria No. Apradh, Kora Kagaz, Don, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Lawaris and Vidhata, catapulting themselves to the top league with RD Burman and Laxmikant Pyarelal. Other stalwarts of the Golden Era had already faded or were on the decline. Shankar Jaikishan owed their supremacy in the 6. Rafi. In the new era they had a major success with Rajesh Khanna starrer Andaaz (1. While Rafi sang a largely forgotten Re mama re mama re, Kishore Kumar had a winner Zindagi ek safar hai suhana singing for Rajesh Khanna. Coming to Mausam (1. Dil dhoondta hai phir wohiwas in Bhupinder’s voice. Rafi sang Chhadi re chhadi kaise gale mein padi. The song hardly enhances the prestige of Rafi. There was a time when Rafi could sing a chhadi (stick) song Laal chhadi maidan khadi, which would make the song and Shammi Kapoor a cult figure (Jaanwar, 1. For over the next 1. Rafi continued singing, the same story repeated. Whatever Rafi did, Kishore Kumar did one better. He would sing for Rajesh Khanna, and later he would become the voice of Amitabh Bachchan. He would sing for Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Vinod Mehra, Jackie Shroff, Rishi Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and everyone. He would sing for the street performer, Ei hai Bambai nagariya tu dekh babuato the night club to a five star hotel party to a rock concert, Apni to jaise taise thodi aise ya waise kat jayegi, Pag ghunghroo baandh Meera nachi reand Sara zamana haseeno ka deewana. He could sing of the life’s ebullient and carefree journey Zindagi ek safar hai suhana, and he would be the voice to express sombre uncertainty of life Zindagi ka safar hai ye kaisa safar. In his voice the evening could be passionate and intoxicating Ye sham mastani madhosh kiye jaye, but at times it could also be melancholy Wo sham kuchh ajeeb thi ye sham bhi ajeeb hai. He would sing the holi song Aaj na chhorenge bus humjoli khelenge hum holi, and he would sing the wedding song Le jayenge le jayenge dilwale dulhaniya le jayenge. Kishore Kumar was the new Rafi, and more. He would define the popular music of 1. Rafi won the Flmfare and National Award for Kya hua tera vadafrom Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin (1. But this could not be much of a consolation. It would be difficult to put this song among his greats or anywhere near Kishore Kumar’s iconic songs of the period. Rafi’s sudden fall from the pedestal must have been bewildering to him, as it was to his fans. Incidentally Manna Dey and Mukesh would not have suffered the same agony. Their strength was never in numbers but in quality, they were not as prolific as Rafi. In the new era too their well known songs can easily be placed among their greatest – Manna Dey’s Nadiya chale chale re dhara, Yaari hai imaan meri yaar meri zindagi, Zindagi kaisi hai paheli, Ae bhai zara dekh ke chalo; or Mukesh’s Duniya se janewale jane chale jate hain kahan, Kahin door jab din dhal jaye, Maine tere liye hi saat rang ke sapne chune, Jaane kahan gaye wo din, Main pal do pal ka shair hoon, Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayal ata haietc. Rewind the clock back to pre- 1. Rafi was the master of all he surveyed. He had his first major success with Naushad’s Suhani raat dhal chuki (Dulari, 1. Naushad juggled between Talat Mehmood and Mukesh as Dilip Kumar’s voice. But he soon settled on Rafi as his lead singer, and what immortal music they gave in Aan, Amar, Deedar, Baiju Bawra, Kohinoor, Mere Mehboob, Palki, Dil Diya Dard Liya, Ganga Jamuna, Leader etc. Shankar Jaikishan had a clear distinction – Mukesh for Raj Kapoor and Rafi for everyone else. SJ- Rafi combination made Shammi Kapoor into a cult figure. SJ owed their dominance in the 1. Rafi. OP Nayyar, Roshan and Ravi were also on Rafi bandwagon and created countless unforgettable melodies of the Golden Era. Among great composers only SD Burman used Kishore Kumar in some significant manner for Dev Anand. But he used several other singers, and Rafi was no less important for him than Kishore Kumar. In Jewel Thief (1. Aasman ke neeche for Kishore Kumar- Lata, he had Dil pukare aa re aa re aa rein Rafi- Lata’s voice. In Teen Deviyan (1. Kishore Kumar’s Khwab ho tum ya koi haqeeqator his duet with Asha Bhosle Are yaar meri tum bhi ho ghazab, Rafi’s Kahin bekhayal ho kar mujhe chhoo liya kisi neand Aise to na dekhowas more than adequate reply. In Guide (1. 96. 5), if he gave Kishore Kumar a duet with Lata, Gata rahe mera dil, all the beautiful solos, Kya se kya ho gaya, Din dhal jaye haye raat na jayeand Tere mere sapne ab ek rang hain, were in Rafi’s voice. If in Paying Guest, Fantoosh and Nau Do Gyarah SD Burman tilts towards Kishore Kumar, it is Rafi all the way in Tere Ghar Ke Samne,Kala Bazaar, Kala Pani and Bambai Ka Babu, and what unforgettable songs SD Burman- Dev Anand- Rafi combination gave such as, Khoya khoya chand, Dil ka bhanwar kare pukar, Tu kahan ye bata is nashilee raat mein, Hum bekhudi mein unko pukare chale gayein the late 1. On the other hand you have SD Burman- Rafi’s immortal songs in Kagaz Ke Phool, Pyasa, Insan Jaag Utha and Meri Soorat Teri Ankhen. A survey of SD Burman’s music for Rafi and Kishore Kumar pre- 1. Rafi. Kishore Kumar was nowhere a competitor to Rafi. None was, though Mukesh, Talat Mehmood, Manna Dey and Hemant Kumar commanded huge respect and following. Kishore Kumar was reckoned after them. And as if to make the position clear, many composers also used Rafi’s voice as playback for Kishore Kumar. In Shararat (1. 95. Kishore Kumar sang a beautiful song Hum matwale naujawan, yet Shankar Raikishan used Rafi’s voice for Ajab hai dastaan teri ye zindagito go on Kishore Kumar. Lyrics / Video of Song : Mere Naina Sawan Bhadon. P. K. ANILKUMAR ( HINDI MELODY BYTES ) on Friday, September 1. Mere Nainaa Saavan Bhaandon. Phir Bhii Meraa Man Pyaasaa. From Internet Movie Firearms Database - Guns in Movies, TV and Video Games.SAAMI recommends a 6 groove barrel with each groove being . A barrel with a bore . The recommended twist rate is 1 in 1. While the bore diameter of . This is because the cylinders of the revolvers are too short to accommodate such cartridges. The now- discontinued Taurus Raging Bull 5. It has a cylinder which is about . S& W Model 5. Euro coin pictured for scale. Compared to the next most powerful commercial sporting handgun cartridge, the . S& W Magnum, which can launch a 3. S& W Magnum produces about 1. S& W. The . 5. S& W Magnum comes into its own when used with heavier bullets, particularly those with weights of 5. When possible these bullets should be seated as far out as possible to take advantage of the complete cylinder length, so as to maximize the powder capacity which the case can provide. Several manufacturers currently produce the S& W 5. Magnum cartridge, with some of the top- performing rounds delivering 3,0. It is claimed to be the most potent handgun cartridge on the market and provides power similar to long- established wildcat cartridges such as the . JDJ (J. Indeed, some rounds use bullets weighing almost 1 oz. Moderate velocity, heavy bullet loads for the . S& W Magnum are similar in performance to the black powder. Government. JHP Reduced Recoil ammunition. Low recoil or reduced recoil ammunition is manufactured by the Grizzly Cartridge Company and Winchester. The low recoiling ammunition reduces the recoil by lowering the velocity of the projectile and/or the mass of the projectile. Winchester's reduced recoil X5. SW ammunition propels a 3. Although such ammunition is considered low recoiling, due to having about one- third of the recoil energy of full- power . S& W ammunition, even these are a significant step up from most of the . Magnums, as they produce twice the recoil energy of a latter cartridge. Cor- Bon introduced the . S& W Special in 2. S& W Magnum cartridge. This cartridge is compatible with handguns chambered for the . S& W Magnum and fires a 3. At present, only Cor- Bon, manufactures ammunition for the . S& W Special in three load configurations. The . 5. 00 S& W Magnum has a very high recoil energy and recoil velocity. The high energy and velocity of the recoil will cause the muzzle to rise when shooting the cartridge. Smith & Wesson incorporated design features to help mitigate both the perceived and actual recoil of their Model 5. Smith & Wesson revolver chambered for the . S& W Magnum. The revolver is equipped with a compensator and Hogue Sorbothane grips. The revolver's considerable weight of 5. The heavy recoil causes some shooters to inadvertently squeeze the trigger as a reflexive action to hold on to the revolver soon after the discharge of the previous round. Furthermore, some shooters have experienced the cylinder unlocking and rotating after the firing of cartridge which is a partial manifestation of the same phenomenon. SP bullet by Hornady. The . 5. 00 S& W Magnum was designed to be primarily a handgun hunting cartridge. It also serves a secondary purpose as a back- up survival handgun cartridge as a defense against the large bears of North America. Bullets above 5. 00- grain (3. African dangerous game. As a hunting cartridge the . S& W Magnum has been found to be effective against elephant and African buffalo as long as ranges are kept within reasonable limits. Smith & Wesson bills the Model 5. The cartridge has had success in harvesting of Alaskan brown bear, American bison, moose, and elk. It is also used to hunt black bear, whitetail deer, wild boar, and feral hogs. Bullets heavier than 3. Winchester’s reduced- load ammunition, are appropriate for use with CXP3 game species. Bullets over 5. 00 gr (3. Hornady’s 5. 00 gr. SP load is rated for CXP4 class dangerous game by Hornady out to 2. Hornady Index of Terminal Standards (H. I. T. S.) calculations. The . 5. 00 S& W Magnum is available in firearms more convenient to carry than a full- sized rifle. This lends to its use as a defensive carry firearm in areas where dangerous predatory species may be encountered. The . 5. 00 S& W Magnum cartridge has found use in survival guns such as the NEF Handi Rifle and the S& W Survival Kit. It is carried in Alaska for defense against the bears. This shorter- barreled revolver is handier, weighing 5. Model 5. 00 8. 3. Firearms and ammunition. These types of revolvers normally have five rounds to allow for thicker cylinder walls to accommodate the pressure generated by the large and powerful cartridge. The single shot Thompson- Center Encore, NEF Handi Rifle, and Towner pump rifle are also chambered for this round. Recently many of these manufacturers have expanded their . S& W offerings, which speaks to the popularity of the cartridge. S& W Magnum Ammunition. Ammunition. Bullet. Muzzle Velocity. Muzzle Energy. Buffalo Bore 1. 8A4. LFN1,6. 75 ft/s (5. Weatherby Magnum does it all. Of the many cartridges developed by Roy Weatherby, the . Magnum was his favorite. Many other hunters have felt the same way down through the decades. Based on annual sales of the various Weatherby cartridges, the . Magnum is in first place followed by the . Magnum, . 2. 57 Magnum, . Magnum, and 7mm Magnum. Weatherby developed his big . Had the slow- burning powders being produced today been available back then, Weatherby would most likely have stuck with the full- length Holland & Holland case. But since IMR- 4. Two other Weatherby cartridges, the . Magnum and 7mm Magnum, share that same case. Like all belted magnums introduced by Weatherby, the . Magnum has the familiar double- radius shoulder. As popular opinion once had it, that type of shoulder had certain magical properties that caused propellant gas to flow more efficiently from cartridge case to rifle barrel. Those of us who knew Roy know why he chose a shoulder of such unusual shape: He chose it because he knew it would not be easy for every shade- tree chamber reamer grinder in America to duplicate. Through the years Roy used the speedy cartridge quite successfully on game as large as moose and elk, and even the mighty Cape buffalo fell with one shot during one of Roy’s many trips to Africa. Declaring war on something as big and potentially nasty as a Cape buffalo with a 1. Roy did it just once to prove to himself that it could be done. The . 2. 57 Weatherby Magnum has long been popular among other big- game hunters as well, and one has only to read the many customer testimonials published in Weatherby catalogs dating back to the first one in October 1. Roy’s son Ed, who now runs the company, used the . Magnum to take a variety of antelope on his first African safari. The list of . 2. 57 Weatherby Magnum fans goes on and on. It is doubtful that many hunters today would use the . Weatherby on game as large and as potentially dangerous as brown bear and polar bear, but hunters of yesteryear did it without hesitation. One thing that made the . Magnum so effective on big game was the fact that Weatherby was quick to realize most bullets available in the old days were too soft to withstand the tremendous impact velocities delivered by his super- speedy cartridge. This prompted him to begin offering ammunition loaded with Nosler Partition bullets as early as the 1. Doing so made Weatherby the first to offer premium- grade ammunition loaded with what is now often described as controlled- expansion bullets, and I am sure it is the primary reason hunters were able to use the . Magnum so successfully on such a variety of game around the world. Back then, two Nosler bullets were offered: a 1. Partition at 3. 55. Partition at 3. 30. The 1. 00- grain bullet was always Roy’s favorite, and since he promoted it at the drop of a hat, I suspect it was also the most popular weight among his many customers who hunted with the . Magnum. The big cartridge is a bit much for hot- barrel prairie dog shooting, but for reaching across the Back Forty and surprising a distant woodchuck or coyote, the 8. When zeroed two inches high at 1. The 1. 00- grain loading at 3. Because of its softness, I will also include the Nosler 1. Ballistic Tip in that same category–although it is my favorite when hunting deer and antelope in open country where shots are likely to be out beyond 2. At closer ranges, the 1. Nosler Partition at 3. I also consider it to be the very best choice for any hunter who decides to try the . Weatherby on larger game, such as caribou, elk, and moose, at any range. In fact, if I had to do it all from mice to moose with a single factory load in the . Weatherby Magnum, it would be the 1. Partition. The factory load with a 1. Magnum. However, it does have a purpose in the scheme of things. Up until 1. 96. 4 the barrels of Weatherby rifles in this caliber had a rifling twist rate of 1: 1. Weatherby offered the 1. Due to its softness, that bullet is not as suitable for use on game larger than deer as the 1. XFB and the 1. 20- grain Partition. Pointed bullets weighing 1. Not long back I did some long- range testing of two Weatherby factory loads with the 1. Spirepoint and 1. Ballistic Tip bullets. Wind velocity ranged up to 2. Wyoming, a place where strong breezes seem to never stop blowing. Shooting from the bench, I observed very little difference in wind drift between the two bullets out to 3. But when I switched to 4. I found the 1. 15- grain bullet much easier to keep inside the vital area of the paper target. According to the ballistics charts, wind drift does not differ all that much between those two bullets, but it seemslike a lot more in the field. The same applies to other parts of the world as well. In Africa, the big stuff, such as Cape buffalo, lion, and elephant, gets all the publicity, but most hunters fire many more shots at plains antelope, such as impala, sable, kudu, and oryx. The ideal rifle capable of handling all of this does not shoot a bullet bigger than your thumb, nor does it pound your shoulder to a pulp with each squeeze of the trigger. The ideal rifle is one that shoots flat, hits hard, generates a level of recoil easily tolerated by most hunters, and is inherently accurate. What I have described is a rifle in . Magnum, and this is why I consider it to be the most useful cartridge in the Weatherby stable. Recoil, Trajectory & Energy. Let’s closely examine each of the three important characteristics I just mentioned. Recoil of a rifle in . Weatherby Magnum is about the same as that of a rifle of the same weight in . Winchester. More specifically, when a 1. Weatherby at 3. 50. When a 1. 30- grain bullet exits the barrel of a nine- pound rifle in . Winchester at 3. 10. In other words, anyone who can handle the recoil of a rifle in . Winchester can also handle the recoil of a rifle in . Weatherby Magnum. Then we have the matter of trajectory. Simply put, no big- game cartridge offered by the major manufacturers shoots flatter than the . Weatherby Magnum. When a 1. 00- grain bullet exits the muzzle at 3. There have been times in my life when the . Weatherby Magnum has shot so flat as to defy explanation. One of those times was on a recent hunt with Wyoming rancher Marty Tillard. Behind Tillard’s ranch house is a nice benchrest and target butts out to 4. I checked the zero of my rifle before heading to the field. I was shooting a Weatherby Vanguard in . Magnum and Weatherby factory ammo loaded with the Nosler 1. Ballistic Tip. Accuracy was minute of angle (MOA) all the way out to that distance. When hunting with that particular rifle and ammunition, I could have held dead- on the vital area of an antelope at any range from just off the toes of my boots all the way out to about 4. No worrying about how much to hold over or under–I could have simply plastered the crosshairs where I wanted the bullet to go, allowed for wind drift if needed, squeezed the trigger, and the bullet would have been there faster than I could have thought about it. I realize such an incredibly flat trajectory totally contradicts the exterior ballistics charts, but that’s what happened on that day. Tillard is an avid coyote hunter and made the decision to build a new heavy- barrel rifle in . Weatherby Magnum while he was looking over my shoulder through his spotting scope. The . 2. 57 Weatherby Magnum also delivers more than enough energy to cleanly take deer and other game of similar size as far away as any of us should attempt. Right or wrong, 1. Weatherby Magnum does just that all the way out to 6. At more reasonable distances, meaning inside 4. Handloading The . Magnum. I know of no American company other than Weatherby presently offering . Weatherby Magnum ammunition, but several have taken a stab at other Weatherby cartridges. Weatherby ammunition is loaded by the Swedish firm Norma, and it is always considerably faster than Weatherby cartridges loaded by American companies. This is because Norma and other foreign manufacturers commonly load ammunition to higher chamber pressures than American companies. Or perhaps I should put it another way: They may not be inherently more accurate, but the rifles chambered for them seem to always respond to a minimum amount of effort on my part by shooting quite accurately. I have yet to work with a rifle in . Remington, . 2. 2 PPC, or . Swift that I could not coax into shooting decent groups. The same goes for the . Winchester, . 2. 43 Winchester, 7mm STW, and . Winchester Magnum. There are a few others, and the . Weatherby Magnum is one of them. Three are Weatherby Mark Vs, and two are Weatherby Vanguards. The other is a custom rifle on the Remington Model 7. Shilen 2. 6- inch match- grade stainless- steel barrel. Now, get this: Every single one of those rifles delivered sub- MOA accuracy with several factory loads and handloads. The custom rifle consistently shot inside a half- inch with seven different recipes, all loaded with big- game bullets such as the Nosler Partition, Speer Trophy Bonded, and Hornady SST. All of this adds up to make it the finest factory antelope cartridge ever created by the hands of mortal man. With this in mind, it is logical to assume that duplicating factory load velocities when using data developed by American component manufacturers such as Hodgdon, Hornady, Alliant, IMR, Nosler, and others would be impossible. Nothing could be farther from the truth. When developing handloads for various rifles in . Magnum I have never found it difficult to duplicate the velocity of Weatherby factory ammunition. Regardless of whether the barrel measures 2. I seldom fail to reach, or even exceed, 3. The Vanguard I shot for this report has a 2. Reloder 2. 2 and H1. Weatherby’s 1. 00- grain factory load. With one exception, the story reads the same for heavier bullets. The exception I mentioned earlier is the Nosler 1. Partition; my fastest handload averaged 3. In addition to being faster than any of my handloads, it was 2. Handloading the . |
